What to Know About Storm Damage

After a storm, your roof will likely need one of three outcomes: a repair, a partial replacement, or a full replacement. The right call depends on what an inspection reveals, not what you can see from the driveway.

A repair handles damage confined to one slope, a run of flashing, or a set of vent penetrations, as long as the decking underneath is sound.

A full replacement is often the best call when we find these warning signs:

  • Shingles beyond repair;
  • Structural issues that put your home at risk;
  • Multiple leaks compromising your interior;
  • Damage across large sections of the roof.

A claim makes sense when the damage is storm-caused, and the cost sits well above your deductible. Sudden wind and hail damage is generally covered; wear from age usually is not. An adjuster determines the extent of storm damage during the roof inspection, which is why everything must be documented accurately from the start.

Storm Damage Questions, Answered

What should we do on the first day after a hailstorm?

Photograph what’s visible safely from the ground, including dents on gutters and the AC unit, plus any interior staining, with the date. Stay off the roof, book an inspection, and check your policy for the notice window.

How do you tell hail damage from ordinary wear?

Hail leaves random impact marks with granule loss and a soft spot in the mat, usually with matching dents on nearby metal. Wear appears as uniform granule loss and curling spread evenly across a slope.

Can wind damage be repaired, or does the whole roof have to go?

It depends on how far the seal failed. Creased shingles and lifted courses on one slope are repairable when the decking is sound. However, damage across several slopes usually requires replacement.

Will insurance cover a storm-damaged roof if it’s already old?

Age doesn’t disqualify a claim, because coverage follows the cause of the damage. It matters for the payout, since depreciation on an Actual Cash Value policy takes a bite out of the check.

Do we have to use the contractor our insurer recommends?

The choice of licensed contractor is generally yours. Preferred-vendor programs are a convenience the carrier offers, not a condition of coverage.

What if our claim is denied?

Ask for the basis of the denial in writing and request a re-inspection. We provide you with our photos, measurements, and estimates for the claims process, while your Claims Specialist continues to manage your file.
